Anode / Cathode

« Back to Glossary Index

In respect to OLEDs, cathodes are normally the “negative” terminal while anodes are the “positive” terminal. In an OLED, current flows of electrons typically flow from the cathode to the anode with electrons injected at the cathode or inversely holes injected at the anode. Metals are normally used as the cathode material while a transparent material such as Indium Tin Oxide (commonly referred to as ITO) are used for the anode. A practical benefit of both materials is that they allow generated light to escape on the anode side and to be reflected outward by the cathode side.
